When Graham and his wife decided it was time to move out of their family home and into retirement living, they knew exactly what they wanted. It had to be close to their network of friends, near their favourite shopping precinct of Camberwell and accessible to public transport.
“Athelstan has certainly equalled, and probably in some respects exceeded, my expectations,” he says.
“I like to come downstairs in the morning and read the paper and have a cup of coffee about mid-morning. It’s very pleasant and gives you an opportunity to chat with other residents.
“It’s a very pleasant environment with pleasant people and what you make out of it is up to you.”
Rex and Maxine
Rex and Maxine jumped into life at Athelstan after moving from Adelaide. They have made many firm friends and enjoy the busy program of activities.
“I think if you move states and leave all your friends behind, it’s good to have a bit of community,” Maxine says.
“We have found it a lovely, warm place to be. We say hello to someone every day – you can be private or join in – whatever you want.
“Athelstan ticked all the boxes we needed to tick – close to family and shopping, on the tram line, a spacious home and lovely people.”
Ruth is known as the “first lady” of Athelstan, as the first person to purchase and move into the complex. And she hasn’t looked back.
“My friends have been blown away by my apartment and Athelstan as a whole,” she says. “They say ‘Ruth this is fabulous – it’s like a five-star hotel but it still feels like home’.”
“My family loves Athelstan and they’re so pleased that I’m so happy here. It really is everything I could have wished for and more.”
Ilse is very content at Athelstan. On her private balcony she can sit amongst her plants, take in the view over the treetops of Camberwell and enjoy the morning sunshine.
“I’m very happy here,” she says. “I had a really big house and I got tired of it and it was just turning out to be a burden."
“I find people here are very nice and I think the staff here are lovely; they are all very helpful.”
